This past Monday I hit a milestone I turned 30!!YESS the dreaded 30s. * takes a deep breath. It's unbelievable how time flies.
I decided to celebrate my big day on Sunday as my birthday happened to fall on a Monday and had a school presentation to do. Way to celebrate an important milestone birthday right? Anyway the beau and I left for New York early Sunday morning. Was a 2 hour drive and we arrived and checked into our hotel at 11.30am. The hotel we stayed at was gorgeous and is smack in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city. It had a great vibe to it and the staff were so sweet. Our room was on the 15th floor with one of the most comfortable beds. James and I loved how techy the room was. You controlled everything from closing the blinds, to turning the lights on and the tv using a samsung tablet. They even had a cool
feature where you could change the lighting according to what mood you were going for. After playing around with all the cool stuff we headed downstairs to the bar. Honestly who doesn't love a refreshing cocktail on a Sunday morning. I got the Eastside fizz that had cucumber and lime. We then went did the tourist thing. I especially loved going to Top of the Rock. Was a pretty cool view of the city.
We got back to our hotel about 6pm and got ready for the night. We went to Red Rooster in Harlem. They had a live band and that was playing blues. The place has a vibrant crowd. We however didn't like the fact that despite having made early reservations we were seated on a table with 5 other people. We could barely hear what we were saying to each other and was a bit uncomfortable being in close proximity with people we didn't know. The food on the other hand was off the charts. I got to eat chicken and waffles for the first time and I must say it was a great experience.
Now I have always envisioned my 30th birthday being this big extravaganza with lots of drinking and hard partying. It was however the total opposite very low key.
Months leading to my birthday I went back and forth about what I wanted to do for my birthday. I got so stressed out about planning to have the perfect birthday that I started contemplating not doing anything and staying home. Thank God my beau wasn't having none of that. When turning 30 you start to compare yourself to all the standards society has set. By 30 one has to be successful, be married, have kids and so the list goes on. A lot of my friends or former classmates are married, have kids have their masters degrees and great jobs. I on the other hand am still in school working on getting my dream job and working on getting my small business to where it needs to be. All in all I have learned and come to accept we are not set to take the same path.
On turning 30, I am hoping to celebrate how far I have come and where I hope to go. They say life begins at 30 and am ready to take on my 30s. Special thanks to my love James for making my birthday a memorable one.
